Enhancing performance

Harmonix® Tri-Nema™ has proven in trials to be an effective Chafer grubs and Leatherjacket control product, up to the 2nd instar stage of development. Trials results and best practice have also demonstrated an enhanced performance when using a strategy of applying an application of 250,000 per m2 to the treatment area, then repeating this application rate to the same area 2 weeks later, maximising the take up by newly hatched eggs as not all the eggs will hatch at the same time. This enables the nematodes to attach, penetrate and infect the newly hatched eggs of the Chafer and Leatherjacket.

Target insects

Over the past few years there has been an increasing problem with high infestations of Chafer grubs and Leatherjackets which has resulted in severe damage to lawns and amenity turf.

Leatherjackets

Cranefly Larva (Leatherjacket)Leatherjackets are the larvae of Crane flies (commonly called Daddy longlegs) and damage occurs from the autumn to spring but is most severe in the spring when the larvae are reaching maturity. Adults start to emerge from pupae at the end of August / October and may be seen flying until mid-October. After hatching they mate and the females lay eggs in the ground, a process which they accomplish in 24 hours. Eggs hatch in about 10 days and the new larvae start to feed on grass roots. During mild winters feeding can continue through the winter and into the following spring. Larvae stop feeding at the end of July/August after which they will pupate close to the surface of the soil. In the UK the most common species is the European Crane fly which only has one generation per year, but it is possible with other species that 3 generations can occur.

Conditions for application

Adult Cranefly (Daddy Longlegs)Identify the activity of pests for control (e.g 4 weeks after adult activity) and apply Harmonix® Tri-Nema™. The area for treatment should be spiked and aerated to provide easier movement for water through the upper profile of soil to reach target pests. For fairways and rough the treatment area should be cut prior to application.

Ensure the area is moist (ideal moisture content ca. 25% soil volumetric content) and apply in low light either in the morning or evening. The soil temperature should ideally be between 12°C – 30°C for best results.

Chafer grubs

Chafer GrubsChafer grubs are the larvae of Chafer beetles. These small but very destructive larvae can cause severe damage to the root system of turfgrass, whether on golf courses, football pitches or racecourses. Playing surfaces can become unplayable or even dangerous as the turfgrass influence on surface stability is compromised. Secondary damage is then caused by birds, badgers and foxes lifting the turf to feed on the grubs.
